Hey, Fair ... here's an interesting picture of Montmartre. Oh, my--that is beautiful. Fits the Phantom mood very well. Dearly though I love the Lloyd Webber musical, my favorite Phantom is still Lon Chaney. This link is to the scene in his 1925 silent film where the Phantom is unmasked by Christine. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8zkYCEOUJY

Blago has a talent--nay, a genius--for self-deception that is almost Republican. It's breathtaking. LOL-- a closet republican! I didn't see the interview, but from past experiences I 'spect that guy is a stranger to reality as most folks know it. Affirmatively. His reality is so far out there it couldn't even be called "alternate."

Here's a funny thing -- Without the TV, I feel oddly disconnected from all of you, even though I never watch the show anyway.

Interesting piece I ran across awhile back, very different from Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman: the late tenor Jerry Hadley and the marvelous mezzo Marilyn Horne singing "All I Ask of You." www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxNNN34ZuME

Actually, I was that way when I first took a break from watching, and the night I watched cause Craig was on felt weird because I HADN'T been watching.

Lon Cheney was infinitely scarier than any other Phantom. In modern times, he's been romanticized.

I think that's the most beautiful recording I've ever heard of that song.
Wow.

Just got an email from Politico.com that House Dems are moving ahead with a "resolution of disapproval" against Joe Wilson tomorrow PM.
No Big Man? Hmmm--

When I watched the clip on Chris Matthews's show, I was thinking that they could just as easily have given that Emmy to Amy Poehler for her Hillary Clinton, which was also flawless.

I think that's the most beautiful recording I've ever heard of that song. Wow. I think I like it better, actually, than Steve Barton and Sarah Brightman's original. Although that was beautiful, what really makes it is the little interlude Michael Crawford sings: I gave you my music Made your song take wing And now how you've repaid me Denied me and betrayed me He was bound to love you When he heard you sing. . .
Christine. . .Christine. . .as they go off into the distance singing it, just before the chandelier falls.

Clinton could laugh because she only benefited by the comparison, although I'll grant that the laughter was no doubt bitter sweet.

They are quite a bit different, aren't they? Crawford is subtler and more sinuous; Hampson is deeper and more passionate. I just imagine the sparkle in his eye and it's a definite swoon moment.

I just got a breaking news alert that Patrick Swayze has died. Oh no--they'd been saying he was doing well-- Really?! Well, it just goes to show. That's what killed my own stepfather. It only took two months from diagnosis, and it ate him alive. The saddest, most courageous thing I've ever personally seen was watching Moonbeam as she bravely held his hand and comforted him through his last few hours. She was ten.

Crawford once said that "The Music of the Night" could be sung sensuously--as a mood piece--or sexually--as a blatantly seductive piece, which is how the director of PHANTOM wanted him to sing it. So I tend to think of his version as sexy and Hampson's as sensuous.

I'm sorry if I'm a bit distracted tonight and behind on my food. Without the TV to mark the time, I find I tend to lose track, especially because the music is so VERY good. If we've had this apple tea cake before, my apologies.
