Okay, here in the Midwest it's getting on down to lunch time. I brought -- Hot dog casserole. Hot dog mac and cheese. And for dessert, a warm chocolate raspberry pudding thingy.

Pam, thanks much for the Man in Black memorabilia! He's in our hearts forever!
Moon, scrumptious hot dog recipes--and yes, indeed, the freezer magnets are great!
Meanwhile, I'm preparing a virtual tour of sites in and around Monroe Co., TN. Will have it ready shortly!

Ahem. Ladies and gentleman (yep, g1, I'm talkin' to you--and will add Rory should he show up), welcome to Cougar's Virtual Tour of Monroe Co., Tennessee. I share a hometown with two gentlemen, sadly no longer with us, who came to national attention for very different reasons. One was Sen. Estes Kefauver who gained fame back in the day for, among other things, a series of Senate hearings on organized crime. May I say here that the proper pronunciation of his last name is KEY-faw-fer; the Big Man, who pronounces it Kih-FAW-ver, is at a distinct disadvantage against someone who actually knows the family. The other is Judge Sue K. Hicks, who in the 1960s was immortalized by songwriter Shel Silverstein and singer Johnny Cash as "A Boy Named Sue." The so-called Kefauver mansion--a private home, BTW--did not belong to the senator; it was owned by his eccentric aunt, who left it to the senator's adopted son. Judge Hicks's home, unfortunately, was destroyed by fire last year. Up Highway 411 some fifteen miles we have a reconstructed pre-Revolutionary War fort, at what is now Fort Loudon State Historical Park on Tellico Lake. In service during the French and Indian War of 1757-1765, the fort figures into a massacre. The fort was overrun and somewhere between twenty and sixty people massacred by the Cherokee in what is now a soybean field on Cane Creek, some ten to fifteen miles by road. Backtrack to New Highway 68 and we come to a prehistoric attraction, the Lost Sea. Truthfully, it was never lost. The bones of a sabertooth (Cougar's REALLY big cousin) were found there long ago and now are in the Smithsonian; the Cherokee knew of its existence; during the Civil War saltpetre was mined there; in the 1920s, my maternal grandmother was the belle of the ball at dances held there. The cave does have the world's largest underground lake, although the past couple of years tours by boat of the lake have had to be suspended as the water levels were affected by drought. My favorite attractions though are in the mountains of the southern end of the county. Highway 68 forks at the base of the famous (and relatively new) Cherohala Skyway, which takes you up to above five thousand feet. Up that high the air, especially in fall, is chilly and bracing and thin and the clearest I've ever breathed in my life. Here's a pic of what it looks like, off a scenic overlook on a cloudy day: It's curvy enough to be beloved of motorcyclists; it's nothing to see groups of fifty or more heading up the mountain, rumbling like thunder. Backtrack yourself down the Skyway and follow the road past the ranger station and you will find yourself at that place I've posted endless pics of the past week or so: Bald River Falls. For the more adventurous members of our group, I could arrange for my brother, a veteran hiker and guide, to take you into such wilderness places as Jeffrey's H*ll, Hooper Bald, and way up on the state line with North Carolina, Dead Man's Run. These places all are beautiful and all have wonderful and somewhat spooky stories behind them, especially Jeffrey's H*ll. Thank you for allowing me to take you around my county. It's home.
