To tell you the truth, I'm torn about which Johnny Mercer song to open with: the lovely wistful "Charade" (1963) www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZO62upvOkiQor the silky sweet "Candy" www.youtube.com/watch?v=TiKzKpKHt2ohere sung by Mercer, the great Jo Stafford and the Pied Pipers--since candy, I understand, will be on the menu tonight. Nowadays I cannot hear Mercer's name without thinking of John Berendt's wonderful book about high society and true crime in Savannah, GA-- Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil--and the tour guides who point out the house where Jim Williams shot and killed his occasional lover, Danny Hansford, in May 1981, and identify it as "the house Johnny Mercer, the famous songwriter, grew up in." Mercer (1909-1975) was the grandson of Confederate Gen. Hugh Mercer, who built the house; no Mercers ever lived there, though, for Hugh Mercer lost it following the war. In the South, though, we cling to the old names of families who either built or lived in a particular location. The house Mom and I live in, where we have lived for forty-one years, is still invariably called the "Young place" for the family who lived here before us. So it is with the Mercer House. There IS a connection between Mercer and the book and film versions of events that happened in the Mercer House, though--one of the main characters in the film refers to himself as "a sentimental gentleman from Georgia"--the title of a Mercer tune, if I remember right. But I'm rambling. Shall we blog? PS Big Man, Lady Fair is not watching tonight.

Since I won the race today to upload new images of Thomas Hampson from Facebook, Fair got the consolation prize. Here it is ... I hope she can live with it. Candy. Sweet.

I haven't heard anything from Patty. Let's see what we can do with all that chocolate I've been cooking up. By the way, I'm within a hair's breadth of selling my house.

Oh, I can DEFINITELY live with that. Meanwhile, in re your references to "Angel" over on FB, Exhibit A: a Mercer tune from 1939, here played by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass: "And the Angels Sing". www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4SSWTYOKUs(Same CD as "More and More Amor"--GOING PLACES, it's called. That's the one we had when I was growing up.)

Hello Moon and Katie. Has either of you heard from Patty? Hi, Linda. No, I haven't. I don't think she has puter access when she's at her parents' house, but I'm praying all's as well as it can be for them.

Thanks, Linda. Actually, the only question is whether I want to move the last little bit.
And I'm starting to think it's time to move. Tomorrow is the day.

Since you're spoiling us with music, allow me to return the favor. I only wish it was real. That would be wonderful. PS Amazing, some of the songs that turn out to be Johnny Mercer.

Lawrence O'Donnell has been a guest on many MSNBC shows lately. I hope they do have a spot for his own show.

What, there's no candy in this mousse? Sue me. (Spork is provided.) Merci, ma chere. Which brings me to another great Mercer tune we sang back in HS choir. Written by composer Joseph Kosma, with French lyrics by Jacques Prevert, in 1945, it got English lyrics by Mercer in 1947. I posted the Ferrante and Teicher instrumental version over at FB--this one is by Roger Williams, whose version went to number one on the charts in 1955 and stayed there for four consecutive weeks. (The words, as I recall them, are kinda overly gooey.)

Lawrence O'Donnell has been a guest on many MSNBC shows lately. I hope they do have a spot for his own show. He's one of my favorites, but he can get a little caustic with folks who he thinks are not up to speed. He does slice and dice, however. We need more folks like that. Much as I like Countdown, that's not a skill he displays most of the time.
