Literally. Allergies. Hence our opening song for the night: Willie Nelson's 1975 version, from his album RED HEADED STRANGER. www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJTsTwD587IThis song has an interesting history. It was written in 1945 by Hank Williams Sr.'s mentor and producer, Fred Rose, probably under the pseudonym Floyd Jenkins. (Rose, before becoming involved in the Nashville music scene, had been a Tin Pan Alley songwriter--given to churning out clever and rather complex lyrics; he worried that he'd be outcast if it were known he wrote beautiful simple country music on the side.) First recorded by Roy Acuff (Rose's partner in the mighty Acuff-Rose publishing company) in 1945 and by Ol' Hank in 1951, it became a number one for Willie in 1975, the high point of the concept album already mentioned, wherein is told the story of a preacher who is on the run for killing his wife, in a combination of original lyrics by Nelson and country classics like this one. It's also believed to be the last song sung (with his own piano accompaniment) to friends and family by Elvis Presley before his death on August 16th, 1977. Like last night's "I Heard the Bluebirds Sing" this is one I frequently sang with my late father. It has at least one other verse, which Willie didn't use: Now my hair has turned to silver All my life I've loved in vain I can see her star in heaven Blue eyes cryin' in the rain. . .Still as heartbreakingly lovely as it was the first time I heard it, nearly thirty-five years ago. As for the rest of tonight's music, we'll see. I may pull in some of Willie's great compositions for other artists--of which there are a plethora. Wanna blog? If so, see ya in a few--

Good evening, Fair. Great music choice. I remember that song quite well. To go with that, I thought some blueberry treats might be in order. But those are weighted heavily on the sweet side, so I thought we could start with a little something savory and work our way up to it. This is a blueberry-based salsa and, of course, tortilla chips.

Excellent. And I agree. Savory first, sweet later.

Has anyone addressed whether employers who provide health care for employees now would be permitted to drop that coverage and keep the premiums that they are currently paying on employees' behalf, effectively taking a REALLY big chunk out of everyone's pay?

Here's one more appetizer -- it looks like a popover split open and filled with blueberries. That doesn't sound so bad.

Hadn't heard. Usually it's half, isn't it? Mine was, back at the factory, at $30 a wk. when we shut down; family was something like sixty a week. At the store I never knew what the premium was; they pd. the whole thing.

But if the ones who are paying more suddenly decide to cut it off, a lot of people will be suffering might big effective pay cuts.

You're right about the clotted cream. And I found one more savory blueberry appetizer ... this one is blueberries with brie ... I think that would be a really good combination.

Next up, Ray Price singing Willie's brilliant bluesy "Night Life": www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHCdK3IRUPQIf I remember right, Willie may have been a member of Ray's Cherokee Cowboys at one point.

Here's a shrimp salad with blueberries. Fair, who else recorded Night Life? I'm thinking Sinatra or Dean Martin or someone like that.

As I predicted at First Read this morning, all the right wingnuts came out after Jimmy Carter. Couldn't they at least TRY to do something original? Sheesh.
I think it's ironic because the demonization of Carter was the beginning of the end, as far as I'm concerned. And here they go again, to paraphrase Ronnie Reagan.

This is a great question!! I haven't heard anyone address it like this!! Well, I think this is the hidden dirty little secret they don't want you to catch on to. If there is no public option, employers will be free to drop coverage and leave individuals scrambling. Unless they offer subsidies, people will be hurting. This could be the surprise of the century, in the worst-case scenario.

I'll serve my last vaguely savory dish now, so we can leave enough time for all the carbs. This is a chicken salad with blueberries. Oh, and hi, Pam.

The White House came out against, well sort of, what Carter said, too and stated Obama "didn't believe it had anything to do with the color of his skin." I understand Obama had to say something; if he didn't, he would have been attacked; however, I wish it didn't come out that way!!

Hi, Pam--that IS an interesting conundrum Moon raises--
As for "Night Life" it is reputedly the most covered country song ever written. I found mentions of recordings by B.B. King, Eric Clapton and even (shudder) Charles Manson of that one song. So Sinatra or Dean Martin totally possible.

I wish some of the people who are poo-pooing the race angle would actually come live in the south awhile. It might be instructive.
